For what it worth: I have built octave-2.1.49 on solaris with
gcc 3.2.3 (off sunfreeware.com) and all other gnu utils installed.
address@hidden dima]$ gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/sparc-sun-solaris2.8/3.2.3/specs
Configured with: ../configure --disable-nls --with-as=/usr/ccs/bin/as
--with-ld=/usr/ccs/bin/ld
Thread model: posix
gcc version 3.2.3
I highly recommend using gnu stuff even when Sun's version is
available -- I seem to remember some obscure problems with
Sun's version of sed e.g...
I built it as a user, but I had installed all libraries and utils
systemwide (as root).
Regards,
Dmitri.
