Escape sequences in Octave

Hi,

I've just got Octave/gnuplot/AquaTerm running on my Mac OSX system and have
been trying a few old matlab files. One has an escape sequence "\_"
(underscore) which octave does not recognise:

warning: unrecognised escape sequence '\_' -- converting to '_'

is there a simple way round this?
