Octave in Mandrake 8.x?

Hello everybody,

As far as I can see from the archive, Mandrake users have problems
while compiling Octave.  I have installed Octave 2.0.16 successfully,
but there is a problem when I try to make figures: gnuplot looks
for temporary files in /home/ana/tmp, but they are not there!
(In fact, I have failed to find any temporary file with the name
starting with oct-.)  Due to this, I cannot save a figure that
I see on the screen in a file.

How this behavior can be fixed?
