Compiling: Error

The following (from Debian 'testing', up-to-date) works for me

ii  gcc            2.95.3-5       The GNU C compiler.
ii  g77            2.95.3-5       The GNU Fortran 77 compiler.
ii  g++            2.95.3-5       The GNU C++ compiler.
ii  flex           2.5.4a-10      A fast lexical analyzer generator.
ii  bison          1.28-8         A parser generator that is compatible with Y

for building the Debian packages.  Why don't you simply install them?

octave2.1-doc_2.1.33-2_all.deb       octave2.1-htmldoc_2.1.33-2_all.deb
octave2.1-emacsen_2.1.33-2_all.deb   octave2.1-info_2.1.33-2_all.deb
octave2.1-headers_2.1.33-2_i386.deb  octave2.1_2.1.33-2_i386.deb
