imagesc and no image...

I have a matrix X and call imagesc(X). The CPU then jugs for a few
seconds - its not a big matrix - and then nothing. No window, no image,
no nothing.

Platform: Linux  2.2.17-21mdk
Octave: GNU Octave, version 2.0.16 (i586-mandrake-linux-gnu) -- from
'octave -version'

So, why no image? I know I have done this successfully before. Any help
is appreciated.
