Octave compiles seamlessly under the latest Debian 'Potato' release.

Debian installs nicely from a 3 CD set (only then first is required for
installation) - find it @ www.debian.org look on ftp sites for the debian
*.iso CDROM images, under the 'debianCD' directory.
