compilation from CVS on FreeBSD 3.3 w/ gcc 2.95 *almost* works

Yes, that would help.  I've been meaning to add a test to at lesat
check to make sure that gperf is available.  If the check can also
make sure that all the required options work, that would be even
better.

Yes, octave-maintainers is a better place to discuss problems with the
CVS version of Octave.
