Plot and zoom

A little while ago a tip came up on this mailing list on how to make
zooming work in gnuplot/octave. 

The mail archive for 2000 fails right now (see
http://www.che.wisc.edu/octave/mailing-lists/help-octave/2000/) so I
wonder if someone remembers the trick. 

Is 2.1.31 stable enough for daily use?
