load ASCII file with "NaN"

Howdy,

        Is there any way to recognize the string "NaN" during ASCII
        input? I get the following surprising result:

$ cat > test.dat
1 2 NaN 3
$ octave

octave:1> load test.dat
octave:2> test
test =

  1  2  2  2

octave:3> quit

        Matlab, for instance, recognizes the string "NaN" for such
        "load" commands, i.e., test = [1 2 NaN 3].

        Peace,
                Andy
