command line octave

What I would like to do occasionally is use octave like a
command line calculator. To do this I would need to be able
to use a command like switch like the -e from perl

ie. you can do
> perl -e 'print 3+6, "\n"'

and I'd like to do
> octave -e 'disp( 5+3 )'

My question is 1) has anyone done this?
               2) how difficult would it be to add?
