Yes. For an example of something like this, you might look at
ftp://ftp.ma.utexas.edu/pub/mzou/XPLOT.tgz. I'm not suggesting that
this is the right thing for Octave, just that modifying gnuplot to
have a more extensive X interface is certainly possible.
