reading ascii file into matrix

Hi:

This seem like something straigtforward that I can't find in the manual.
I've tried a number of things like fopen, fread, load.  I need something
like the GAUSS load command:

load dta[2176,21]=c:\dat\sp2b.dat;

Any programming examples would be appreciated.
