String elements

Hello all, thank you for the reactions on my previous question. I have
another question:

How can I select a (range of) elements from a string? Eg:
  str='foo bar'
I would like to select elements 3,4 and 5 and try
  substr=str(3:5);
This unfortunately does not work. Is there another way?
