i've fought this one before, when installing gift on another friend's gentoo 
machine.
this basically boils down to a major change in the version of the perl C API.
i started coding my way arround it, but found the best way was to just break 
the perl detection routine in the configure, thereby disabling the perl plugins.
patches for the work i did are still arround. honestly, i gave up. :)
