All,

How different are things such as emasclient between versions of emacs?

I’m assuming that that the following are similar:

·         Ddeclient

·         Cmdproxy

·         Ctags/etags

·         Ebrowse

·         Emacsclient

·         Movemail

·         Hexl

·         Sorted-doc

Is that true?

Matt.

I define an environment variable called EMACS, assign the variable part of the installation path to it and then use it to set up PATH and various customised shortcuts. For example, on this computer (which I haven’t upgraded yet) I have EMACS set to C:\NTEmacs\emacs-23.2 and PATH includes %EMACS%\bin. (Of course, if you use backslashes in a quoted context you need to double them; what I have shown is how they appear in the System Properties dialogue boxes.)

Using environment variables works OK in shortcuts but they don’t seem to get expanded in file associations, which is a pity. (Working out how to define file associations so that they automatically pick up the right version of emacsclientw without undesirable side effects is still work in progress!)

Francis

Hi,

I install Emacs to C:\Program Files\emacs-VERSION.  When I upgrade to a new version, I have to make some changes to correct paths that include the previous version.  Would you please include instructions in the FAQ for how to upgrade?  Or is it better to install Emacs in a version-invariant directory?

Here are the steps that I performed in upgrading from 23.2 to 23.3:

 * Change the Emacs version number in the ALTERNATE_EDITOR system environment variable.

 * Change the Emacs version number in the PATH user environment variable.

 * Run C:\Program Files\emacs-VERSION\bin\addpm.exe.

 * Change the "Start in" directory my My Documents folder.

 * Use regedit to delete "My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\emacsclientw.exe".

Thanks for providing GNU Emacs for Windows,

Matt
