[h-e-w] server can't start

I recently synchronized my .emacs and .emacs.d between a windows and Linux machine. In windows I am now getting messages like
server-start: Opening output file: no such file or directory, //.emacs.d/server/server
and the server doesn't start correctly.
How do I fix this?
