Apparently I also need to ...

$ export LANGUAGE=en

And then I hit the bug that 7e91d5d58c50fa64f41218c9c8157a4e8dbb3107
fixed. :)

So ... setting LANG LANGUAGE and LC_ALL seems to be a viable workaround,
but a bit ugly to be so locale-dependent.
