I'm not aware of how the release process works (documented nowhere
to my best knowledge), but given this request I think it would be
nice if we could record the git commit the release was build from
to the README or some other file which ends up in the tarball.

Or maybe a record of versions of commits.

0.9: asdf819292921asdcommit
0.10.0: ....
0.10.1: ....

and so on.
