The driver from AMD is proprietary, so you would like to avoid that.
Without knowing the exact error message I would have to guess how to
handle it. If you're booting from the live CD you could hit the Tab key
at the boot menu and then add "vga=771" (without the quotes) to the
boot parameters. This changes your screen settings to a simpler mode.
Hopefully the desktop can handle that better.
