Hi ben,
thunderbird is free software apart from the artwork but that is a non
essential part of the program that can be easily replaced so the
software can be considered free.
There is a libre browser called GNU IceCat based on Mozilla Firefox
because in that case there are not only non free artwork but also non
free plugins.
That is not the case of thunderbird.
Both of them have non free addons but that's another thing too.
