that hdc message looks like a drive problem.

Try validating the cd (I think the ubuntu installer cds have md5's of
all the files they contain; the gNS install CD may also).

Next, check hardware. Check for a faulty IDE Cable (check the cable,
always check the cable), a bad CD-ROM drive (try swapping it out) or a
buggy IDE controller (uhh...)

If all else fails, run Memtest on the thing overnight and see what you
get. Don't test just for a few minutes; I'd like to see times measured
in hours.

You may see memory errors very quickly, usually a stuck bit or
something. Pull and reseat the memory to fix those generally.
