Of course gNewSense is based on Ubuntu, which is in turn based on Debian.

My understanding is that gnewsense reuses Ubuntu's simple graphical
installer (Ubiquity); personally I use gnewsense-kde which also has a
good GUI installer (maybe this is also Ubiquity).
