I forgot to mention one more thing.  I tried 'drip' - which is a  'GNOME application for encoding a DivX from a DVD'.  However, I get the message:


libdvdcss is not installed, most DVD disks wont be readable! To get this working install libdvdcss, recompile libdvdread
and recompile Drip. After that all DVD's should read just fine.

when I start it.  Which is nonsense as I do have libdvdcss2
 installed on my computer.

Would I be safe installing libdvdcss or is there a risk of messing up my dependencies?

The last thing I need is to recompile Drip or libdvdread, but there does not seem an option in drip to point it to libdvdcss2.

What's the smart way to make this stuff work?!

I need to find an application which would allow me to rip a DVD into a avi -type of fine.  I was advised to look at xdvdshrink (
http://dvdshrink.sourceforge.net/) which looks good, but which is not found in the gNewSense repos.  Furthermore, the binarines are RPM (a 
tar.gz version also exists).

Is there an equivalent somewhere in the gNewSense repos.   Surely not all users of gNewSense/Ubuntu/Debian need xdvdshrink to backup their DVDs?

Also - I can use k9copy to make an iso file of a DVD (selecting titles and track, by the way, which is very good) and dvdbackup allows me to copy a DVD structure unto my hard disk which I can later re-construct with growisofs.  However, is could there be a way to either take the iso of the DVD or the copied DVD structure (with files like "VIDEO_TS.BUP  VTS_02_0.VOB  VTS_04_1.VOB  VTS_06_0.BUP  VTS_08_0.IFO VIDEO_TS.IFO  VTS_02_1.VOB  VTS_04_2.VOB  VTS_06_0.IFO  VTS_08_0.VOB etc." and convert  *that* (rather than an original DVD) into an mpeg/avi file?

Somebody out there is making (backup) avi files out of DVD and some of these 'somebodies' is using Debian, so what is the best trick?

Lastly - I still have not found a way to rip the audio out of a DVD.  Surely that must be doable.  Can anyone tell me how to do this?
