Try this.
1. Boot the live cd
2. mount the / partition
3. open the /etc/shaddow file for editing
4. Copy and past the password hash for your friend into the root space
5. Reboot and use your friend's passwd for the root account

The root line should look like this:
root:<HASHED PASSWORD>:13502:0:99999:7:::
Just copy your friend's hash:
friend:<FRIEND'S HASHED PASSWORD>:13456:0:99999:7:::
and past it into the root's

I don't know how to solve your problem, but this should explain why there's no "root": https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo

The user that's created during installation does not automatically have root priviliges all the time. It's still necessary to use "sudo" (or "gksudo") to do anything that requires such priviliges.
