Debian and Ubuntu kernels have non-free binary blobs in them. If you use these distros, you have non-free software on your system.

As far as I know, the Linux kernel in Debain contains binary-only
firmware, and in gNewSense it doesn't, as any of it which is in Ubuntu
has been taken out.
