There was a time during the transition between Stan Shebs' regency
and the current arrangement, when RMS (so I hear) insisted that gdb
had only one maintainer, and that the rest of us were all just some
kind of 'helpers'.
I think that is partly true and partly garbled. Every GNU package has
an official maintainer or maintainers, who are appointed to take
charge of it; but there can be more than one maintainer. In the case
of GDB, there are nine official maintainers.

current steering committee of nine people as co-maintainers.
However, if some of them are no longer interested in carrying out
this responsibility, we should perhaps bring in some new blood.
