Follow-up Comment #3, bug #26464 (project duplicity):

Just read the article on the new ChrootDirectory option to sftp, 
http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/590 and it looks promising.  I
wish they had done this across the board for all of ssh, but this is a start. 
Maybe you could suggest this.

I don't have the time right now to tackle this, but will leave it open to
remind me to look into it when time permits.
