Another update: I ran duplicity 0.5.03 on a different XP box to a different
linux box and got the same results. All these cygwin bash commands failed
withing minutes:

while true ; do PASSPHRASE=test duplicity duplicity_test_dir
ssh://address@hidden//home/user/backup_test ; done;

while true ; do PASSPHRASE=test duplicity --tempdir ~/temp --short-filenames
--time-separator _ duplicity_test_dir 
ssh://address@hidden//home/user/backup_test ;
done;

while true ; do PASSPHRASE=test duplicity --tempdir ~/temp duplicity_test_dir
ssh://address@hidden//home/user/backup_test ; done;
