It would solve the problem and be relatively simple in the
implementation.  I was thinking that the future Python binding could be
used to do most complex field editing, although there are probably many
cases where it would be too complex while this could be used.

(Would not call it a "text editor" when describing this feature, it can
use any filter shell command.)
