Here is a quasi stable version of my private snapshot:

A lot of big, uncommitted changes mostly related to reworking the
Linux backend with libnl is lying with me. Using libnl might make it
easy to merge linux_add.c, linux_add.c and linux_delete.c into one
linux.c.
