   The problem is in it's utility (or lack thereof).  Just compare the
   lines from gimp:

   *** A new enough version of pkg-config was not found.
   *** See http://www.freedesktop.org/software/pkgconfig/

That is during the configure step, not during the compilation.
Different steps, different criteria of what is needed, what can go
wrong, etc.  But if you can hack gcc to write something like that
whenever something goes wrong, by all means!!! :)

   Versus your approach of pointing me to cvs where I'll no doubt find
   an unstable version of the code.

It is what has current bug fixes; I don't even think it contains a lot
of new features.  So it is infact quite stable.  If you wish to use
inetutils, you have two choices, CVS or backport the change to 1.4.2.
Using the CVS version also helps us fix bugs that might have croped up
due t changes etc, so really, there is no bad thing about using the
CVS version of inetutils.
