I don't know if this makes any difference, but autoconf 2.58 has a major bug.
autoconf 2.59 was released pretty quickly after 2.58, to fix this bug.
autoconf 2.59 hasn't appeared on ftp.gnu.org yet, but you can get it from the
website of Akim Demaille, the main autoconf maintainer:

    http://www.lrde.epita.fr/~akim/download/autoconf-2.59.tar.gz

Alternatively, perhaps downgrading to autoconf 2.57 would help?
