If giveio.sys is your main concern, I think the patch actually is a
step towards the right direction then.
What I'd wish to see then:
* turn the patch from a run-time into a configure and compile-time
option (--enable-giveio, #ifdef USE_GIVEIO); I don't like to have
another commandline flag for it
* default it to the InpOut driver
* document all this, i.e. make sure the documentation describes what
needs to be done on Windows in order to access a parallel port
Nevertheless, I tend to turn the configure.ac default for parport to
"disabled" starting at release 6.4, given that there's almost no
hardware around for it anymore.
