I'm sorry this is dragging on so long and being so painful for you.
I would like to see necessary arguments removed and wrappers used
as seamlessly as possible, but it needs to happen without degrading
Autoconf maintainability and with the usual configure logic of testing
for features.  I just don't think that we've found the best solution
here yet.

As long as workarounds are needed, maybe the best way to proceed is to
document them in one place, so they can easily be found?  One practical
issue here is that GNU manuals should not recommend non-free software,
so the obvious place is not available.
