you said it josh ;-)
incidentally i have downloaded a x86 emulator this weekend. checkout http://bochs.sourceforge.net
this helps me personally as i can work on my laptop during the week instead of waiting for the weekend to work on my desktop.
i think next week i will find some time to research this line more i.e. trying to write something from scratch on this emulator.
any ideas are welcome.

all,

i think that experience and practical knowledge in writing the nuts &
bolts of a kernel is what we are lacking. M.J. - hopefully your
experience with writing a "game console" kernel will aid our efforts
to put together a ver 0.1 prototype kernel. the main goal here is to
get some actual experience putting together a kernel. so we can then
make a more informed decision about how to design the Y kernel.
ishwar - correct me if i am wrong on any of this.

- josh

Ishwar --
Sorry it's taken me so long to reply.  We're entering the
end-of-the-quarter crunch here and I'm also sick.  What is it exactly you
would like me to detail?  The kernel I wrote wasn't for the x86
architecture-- it was written for a hypothetical game console  which was
emulated by some linux software, so I don't have a lot of x86 details
that would be useful.  However, I could give an overview of OS theory if
you think it would be useful.
