In the case of the Kindle, the only way you can buy a book is to buy it
from Amazon<a href="" and Amazon requires you to
identify yourself, so they know everything that you've bought.
Nota:
That was true at the time. As of 2018, it is possible to load books
from other sources, but the device reports the name of the book being
read to Amazon servers; thus, Amazon knows every book that you read on
the device, regardless of where you got the book.
