Some comparisons of CPU time throwing the ouput to /dev/null:

- wget, Debian:  5900ms
- curl, Debian:  3900ms
- wget, this PR: 2470ms
- wget2, -O0: 2200ms

My SSD is too full to test with a 20G download, lol. It throttles down to less 
than 10MB/s when reaching > 95% capacity.
