I think what I've said already justifies this change.

You may already be aware, but mime/types are the type of file served by a 
web-server. These mime/types generally correspond to a file extension, eg jpg 
or jpeg. Computers use those extensions to know how to open files.

When wget operates in a different way, appending a number eg .1 it upsets the 
apple-cart, as the expression goes.

Re vmware on GNU/Linux and other Unix
just observe the various log files vmware.log vmware-1.log vmware-2.log

Other modern software such as Xorg follows the same convention. eg
Xorg.0.log
