Dear Sir/Madam:

Thank you for your interest in pursuing graduate studies at the University of
Calgary, Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.

Please read the following information carefully before applying. It should
provide all you need to know regarding applying for graduate programs in the
Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Department and offer links for further
information.

Degree Programs
_______________

The Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering offers graduate
programs leading to the Master of Engineering (MEng), thesis and course-based
routes, Master of Science (MSc), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in the
areas of Applied Mechanics; Biomechanics; Energy Conversion and Conservation;
Materials and Design; and, Manufacturing Engineering. In addition, the
Department offers the Master of Engineering (Course-Based and Thesis route)
with specialization in Engineering for the Environment.

Entrance Requirements
_____________________

As our Department receives applications from many more students than can
possibly be admitted (on average, at least 500/year of which approximately 5%
are accepted), only the most qualified are considered, and in most cases only
students with first-class academic standing are admitted. Our experience
indicates that applicants must have academic backgrounds within the general
requirements listed below:

A BSc Degree from a recognized university with a minimum four-year program or
equivalent.

Two official sets of transcripts (and degree certificates from those
institutions that do not indicate the awarding of degrees on the transcript)
from all post-secondary institutions attended, regardless of the number of
courses taken or the amount of time spent there, sent directly to the Dept of
Mechanical of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering. Transcripts and degree
certificates issued in a language other than English must be accompanied by
certified, word-for-word English translations. To be considered official, all
academic records must be received by the Department in envelopes that have been
sealed and endorsed by the issuing institution. Transcripts received from
applicants or any other third party will be considered unofficial.

Three reference letters on University of Calgary forms, from referees prepared
to provide a report on your academic ability and qualifications. All
references must be sent directly to the Department in sealed envelopes bearing
the refereesÂ’ signatures across the seal. References received from applicants
or any other third party will be considered unofficial.

An up-to-date resume.

Canadian Universities -- a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 point system (72% or better)
for your last two undergraduate years or 20 courses, whichever is greater.
When you have taken less than 20 courses in the last two years, we count back
in increments of one term. All courses in a term must be used and not simply
the best 20 courses. You canÂ’t split a term to obtain a total of 20 courses.
India -- Distinction or First Division in Bachelor's with a Master's degree,
or Bachelor's degree from Indian Institute of Technology/Management with an
average of 8.0 on a 10.0 point scale.
Japan -- High Second Class standing (approximately GPA 2.4 on a 3.0 system,
or better).
Middle East -- 80-85% average.
Pakistan and Bangladesh -- First Class or First Division Bachelor's with a
Master's degree.
People's Republic of China -- B average, 80% or better.
Philippines -- First Class Bachelor's and Master's degrees to enter Master's
program.
Taiwan -- A average - 80% or better.
United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand (and other Commonwealth countries whose
university systems follow those of Great Britain) -- minimum Upper Second
Class Honours degree.
United States - B average -- at least 3.0 on a 4.0 system or the
equivalent in other systems.
Students are also required to maintain a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 system to remain
in the graduate program.

English Language Proficiency
____________________________

Students whose native language is not English are required to provide proof of
proficiency in English by passing the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign
Language) examination with a score of 550 minimum paper-based or 213
computer-based. Applicants may also provide a proof of proficiency in English
by passing the IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
examination with a minimum of 7.0. Students with scores that are more than two
years old must re-write the examination. Full admission will not be granted
before the Faculty of Graduate Studies receives the official or verified test
score.
