That sounds as if the terminal's being switched to/from the alternate screen.

For xterm, you can disable the alternate-screen feature (using the middle
mouse menu) or switch back using the same menu. For other terminals - not
so easy - you can pick a terminal description lacking the feature from the
smcup/rmcup strings -
