Which tar version? Makefiles?

Hi folks,

Is there something funny about the current source release tar files? I cannot
expand
them easily on OS/2 using gzip and/or tar. Could there be a version problem?

So, I downloaded the Linux RPM sources and they unpack OK using rpm manager for
OS/2.

However, the makefiles now seem to be entirely oriented to the RPM approach,
with
which I am not very familiar.

Can anyone offer some guidance on getting the sources to compile? The OS/2
environment is very Unix-like from the GNU compilation point of view -- but the
non-RPM makefiles seem to be missing.
