Yes.  There is an easier workaround which I forgot to mention - with
ControlPersist enabled and ControlMaster set to 'auto', switching to
the 'scpx' transfer method works nicely for me.  If that sounds
reasonable to you, maybe adding that to the manual is sufficient.
