That is understandable. 

With the '&' attached play_vk starts playing the soundfile but returns
immediately. Without it waits until the sound is played before
returning.

So on one side the auto_cq timing is shorter (missing the time to play
the sound) and on the other side tlf will not accept keyboard input as
long as the script is waiting unti the sound is played.

I think we have to go the way you suggested in one of your other mails:
playing the sound in another process after a fork. I will experiment in
that direction.
