This is correct, node comes from "THISNODE=<A...H>" in logcfg.dat (see man tlf). If you add "THISNODE=A" to logcfg.dat and enter a note saying "this is a note" after QSO 6, the note will say:

; Node A, 6 : this is a note

If there is no THISNODE in logcfg.dat, the line will be:

; Node this is a note

Because THISNODE equals '\0' (there is no default for THISNODE).
The attached patch against tlf-0.9.18 will call your node 'X' by default. Apply the patch as follows:

cd tlf-0.9.18
patch -p1 < /path/to/patch.node

Maybe Rein has a better solution.
