Hi Charlie...

you are probably using an xterm which is not completely ncurses-compatible. 
(see the FAQ and the documentation).

What works best for me is a KDE konsole with TERM=rxvt, or a real linux text 
console of course.

When using the KDE konsole be sure to set keyboard=linux, that will solve the 
problem with the keycodes.

Maybe you should tackle one problem at the time, and first get TLF running and 
then the keyer.
