different variable is probably what is needed, maybe "PERLCFLAGS" or
"XSCFLAGS" or "EXTENSIONCFLAGS".
Ok, if a user can set another variable, let's say PERLCFLAGS, to control
the flags for the xs compilation, that makes sense. For instance, a
user should be able to say CFLAGS=-g PERLCFLAGS=-g (or whatever) to
eliminate optimization.
I think PERL or XS would be a better name than EXTENSION. I'd go for
PERL. One can theoretically imagine a program using multiple extension
languages, and then the language name would seem clearest. (PERL,
PYTHON, GUILE, ...) -k
