I think we shouldn't either, as that is likely going to cause several
problems that are definitely not warranted by such a minor consistency
issue. Currently, there are some unsolved issues in the Automake
master branch (related to the AM_PROG_MKDIR_P attempted removal fiasco),
but I think they will be solved before the 2.0 release (which shouldn't
happen before one year from now, at least).
That said, it's not a good reason for GNU packages not to stop using
deprecated stuff ;-)
