What am i missing?
I discovered this page:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/5033441/where-does-git-store-the-sha1-of-the-commit-for-a-submodule
which explained away my confusion.
In the end, it was enough to do:
$ cd contrib/gana
$ git pull origin HEAD
and then (at top-level) commit that change.
