[Synaptic-devel] does not install packages

When using synaptic to install/upgrade packages, nothing actually happens 
after select apply and confirmation of apply the pkgs are not installed 
neither upgraded.  The retrieving pkgs window is shown, but it quites just 
after it pops up, this is seen at about the same time:
(synaptic:3025): Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkwidget.c: line 3892 
(gtk_widget_set_sensitive): assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed


during start up the following reports are seen:

(synaptic:3025): Gtk-WARNING **: gtk_scrolled_window_add(): cannot add non 
scrollable widget use gtk_scrolled_window_add_with_viewport() instead

(synaptic:3025): Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkwidget.c: line 1827 
(gtk_widget_hide): assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed

(synaptic:3025): Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkwidget.c: line 3892 
(gtk_widget_set_sensitive): assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed


The packages can be installed with apt-rpm (0.15.5cnc5) without problem.  
Synaptic has version 0.48pre1.  However, the problem is reported on earlier 
versions as well.  

Anyway to debug this?
