In my program to check existence of function I used AC_CHECK_MEMBERS.
This is not for functions, but it works :)

# apt-rpm has this function
AC_CHECK_MEMBERS(pkgSourceList.GetReleases(0),,,[#include
<apt-pkg/sourcelist.h>])
